Our Story

Some of the best businesses start around the kitchen table, and Clarkes Butchery and Farm Kitchen is no exception.

A truly family affair – the kitchen table in question belonged to Livestock Agent, Mayhew Clarke, and his wife Daphne. But it was son Andrew, along with his hand-operated sausage machine that really started the meat balls rolling.

After spotting an opportunity to supplement his income from a local abattoir by making sausages, Andrew’s side venture soon became so successful that the table was rarely vacant, much to his mother’s frustration. Eventually it was decided that a preparation room needed to be constructed in the farmyard to accommodate his fledgling business, not to mention free up the family table!

With word continuing to spread about Andrew’s high quality and flavoursome sausages, and orders coming in thick and fast for steaks and other meats, to cope with demand the preparation room was expanded again to become the fully fledged commercial butchery that exists today.

Although still managed by Andrew, experienced butchers, Matthew Wenn and Andrew Long, service the butchery on a day-to-day basis, supplying locally sourced, exceptional quality and flavoursome meats to loyal customers and catering businesses.

Farm Kitchen

In 2007,  Daphne, the daughter of a cook, her sister and daughter, Sarah Long, introduced the farm kitchen side of the business, producing a wide variety of wholesome meat pies, ready meals, and sweet and savoury treats.

In 2008, Daphne & Co. were nominated by a happy customer for the prestigious Norfolk Hero Food & Drinks Awards, ultimately winning the category for their high quality and incredibly moreish meat pies.

In 2015, Sarah’s daughter, Charlie, entered the kitchen, along with City College Norwich trained chef, Michael Bayle. Michael gained his experience at Green Farm where he was head chef. He then moved to Groveland where he trained as a butcher. The new generation bring with them fresh perspectives and ideas, and a desire to build upon the early successes of the previous generations of the Clarke family.
